Update:
Members of the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) assigned to United Way of Greater Cincinnati’s Free Tax Prep initiative were informed on April 15 that NCCC could not sustain operations due to funding cuts and that volunteers would exit the program early. They departed the next day.
During their abbreviated time with the Free Tax Prep initiative, the team filed more than 750 returns for individuals and families in Greater Cincinnati. They helped taxpayers save over $200,000 in filing fees and secure more than $600,000 in refunds.
United Way of Greater Cincinnati thanks all 11 members for the positivity and perseverance exhibited during their time with us. This team, along with hundreds of other Free Tax Prep volunteers, made a direct impact on the lives of families throughout the area, and we’re grateful for their support.
CINCINNATI (March 27, 2025) – The Free Tax Prep initiative of United Way of Greater Cincinnati is partnering with an AmeriCorps team for the second year to help prepare and file taxes for low-to-moderate-income people in the region.
The 11 AmeriCorps members serve in the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) program and are from the North Central Region campus in Vinton, Iowa. Their eight-week partnership with United Way runs through April 23.
Last year, the AmeriCorps team of nine assigned to United Way filed 509 returns, which saved taxpayers in Greater Cincinnati $140,000 in fees and resulted in $357,000 in refunds. This year’s team set a goal of filing 600 returns.

“We’re fortunate to have an AmeriCorps team working alongside us again this year to help individuals and families navigate the tax filing process,” said Moira Weir, President and CEO, United Way of Greater Cincinnati. “The team brings great energy and enthusiasm to their work, and together, we can ensure more taxpayers in our community get the refunds and credits they’re owed.”
Each year, United Way’s Free Tax Prep serves thousands of people in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana. Committed volunteers prepare and file tax returns for free. Last year, United Way volunteers prepared more than 8,000 returns and helped filers claim $9.3 million in federal refunds.
“We are excited to partner with United Way to assist with the Free Tax Prep program and serve the Cincinnati community,” said AmeriCorps member Seth Anquoe. “The opportunity to see the impact of our service and create long-term change through financial education and economic development is really meaningful and fulfilling.” Organizations sponsor AmeriCorps NCCC teams to respond to community needs. Short-term NCCC service projects operate through partnerships with nonprofits, state and local agencies, and other community and faith-based groups.
