Ensuring children succeed in school by addressing family housing insecurity.
United Way of Greater Cincinnati’s Stable Families program is a vital tool for supporting children’s success in school by ensuring families have stable housing. A disruptive move during a school year can set children back in their academic achievement, often creating a negative ripple effect that harms their future success. Working with community partners, the program identifies families at risk of losing their homes and provides short-term interventions to address urgent needs, such as critical bills, while offering opportunities to increase household earnings.
At the same time, caring case managers work with families to assess their housing situation and ensure that they are planning expenses to stay in their homes and keep their kids in school. We know the best way to help children thrive is to look at the family holistically, so helping to stabilize the family’s financial foundation and ensuring the children have a consistent school experience become a solution for whole-family success.
Since the program’s inception in 2009, Stable Families has grown from serving 60 families to more than 400 annually.

With critical support from the Siemer Institute, United Way of Greater Cincinnati raises and contributes matching dollars that support Stable Families at Brighton Center and Santa Maria Community Services. A significant portion of the funding provides direct assistance for families to address their needs. Other funds support coaches who work directly with families.
