Our local communities depend on federal and state funding for critical housing programs. The programs prevent housing insecurity, and they help thousands of our neighbors stay in their homes and maintain a safe living environment.
According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, as of January 2025, over 89,000 households in Indiana, more than 165,000 Kentuckians and over 422,000 Ohioans rely on federal rental assistance to afford modest housing. Roughly 70% of each of these groups are seniors, children or people with disabilities.
State-funded programs play a vital role in housing stability. The Ohio Housing Trust Fund has helped nearly 2 million low-income Ohioans access safe, affordable housing. Indiana’s Affordable and Workforce Housing Tax Credit and Kentucky’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund — both state-funded — also support housing accessibility.
United Way of Greater Cincinnati recently surveyed more than 100 local nonprofits, many of which support stable housing initiatives. The nonprofits reported that federal funding accounts for at least 25% of their operating budgets, and they consider it a critical source of revenue for providing services to our communities.
Will you ask your elected officials to support state and federal funding for housing programs? It takes only a few seconds.
