United Way Hosting Book Drive Prior to August 24 FC Cincinnati Game

United Way of Greater Cincinnati is FC Cincinnati’s “Community Partner of the Game” for their Wednesday, August 24, match against the Rochester Rhinos. We're challenging FC Cincinnati’s passionate fan base to rally around an important cause in our community—the fight against childhood illiteracy.

Fans attending the game are asked to bring a book to donate as they enter. The books collected will go toward the Cincinnati Enquirer’s childhood literacy initiative as part of their 175th anniversary, in which United Way and The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County are partners. The Enquirer’s goal is to collect 17,500 new or gently used children’s books for regional library systems by April 10, 2017—the day of their 176th anniversary. The books will be used in the libraries’ 2017 summer reading program for local students.

With approximately 90% of a child's brain developed before the age of five, improving early childhood literacy and emotional readiness are key to ensuring all students are kindergarten ready. Increasing readiness is one of United Way’s Bold Goals for our Community, and an important milestone toward life success.

United Way volunteers will be at each entrance of Nippert Stadium to collect the books as fans enter.

“We are excited to host a book drive to engage with FC Cincinnati fans,” said Brett Jager, public relations and media strategist, United Way of Greater Cincinnati. “We look forward to raising awareness to the importance of child literacy and encouraging fans to get involved and give back to this community we love so much.”

Additionally, fans that purchase FC Cincinnati tickets online can use the promo code LIVEUNITED16 and United Way will receive 20% of the proceeds of each ticket sold.

August 24 is also the day of United Way’s Campaign Kickoff at Fountain Square. Learn more!
