United Way and Duke Energy Partner on Volunteer Projects for Duke Energy in Action Month

United Way of Greater Cincinnati and Duke Energy united in partnership for two different volunteer events in May as part of Duke Energy in Action Month. The two events aligned with the 3 priorities of the Duke Energy Foundation: Kindergarten to Career, Community Impact, and Environment.

Duke Energy united to change lives in the communities of Westwood on May 3 at the Gamble-Nippert YMCA, and Evanston on May 24 with Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

“Duke Energy’s partnership with our local United Way not only strengthens our employee’s volunteering experience, it also unites the passions that both organizations have for powering a stronger, more vital community,” said Chuck Session, vice president, Duke Energy Government and Community Affairs. “For Duke Energy’s month of service this past May, United Way was able to align Duke Energy’s giving strategies with volunteerism, bringing over 80 employees to help impact local nonprofits like the YMCA and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.”

We know providing a clean, fun, stimulating environment for children is critical for a strong start in school and life. Together, United Way and Duke Energy improved indoor and outdoor learning environments for children attending the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Gamble-Nippert location in Westwood on May 3.

Volunteers provided physical outdoor beatification, including painting brightly colored picnic tables, cleaning and beautifying the playground and adding plants and other foliage to the entire outdoor area to make it more vibrant and welcoming for the children. Additionally, the volunteers worked inside to paint, clean and provide other interior improvements, and refurbishing the child care center rooms.

“We’re proud to have partnered with Duke Energy on two volunteer projects to serve children and families in our region as part of their Duke Energy in Action Month,” said Teresa Hoelle, senior vice president and chief marketing officer, United Way of Greater Cincinnati. “We’re grateful for corporate partners like Duke Energy who are committed to strengthening our local communities by volunteering to help those in need.”

United Way and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful (KCB) partner throughout the year to unite volunteers with meaningful projects that create beautiful neighborhood spaces for residents to enjoy. On May 24, Duke Energy volunteers were engaged in this work to re-design and enliven two vacant lots in the Evanston community. The impact created through this event also provides opportunities for the surrounding schools to engage their students in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) related learning.

Volunteers participated in hands-on beautification projects to help implement a new greenspace design, including clearing invasive or decaying plants, creating new plant beds and installing new plants.

Thank you, Duke Energy, for your commitment to Live United, and helping children and families in our region succeed!
