Ebony Turner works two jobs to support her family. But in the pandemic year of 2020 — a year she describes as “extremely trying” — she lost months of wages after being furloughed by Cincinnati Public Schools and Cincinnati Recreation Commission. “It was a significant loss of income. It really put a strain on my household,” says Turner, 45, a single parent who lives in the West End with a daughter, 16, and a son, 22. Her financial responsibilities also extend to her two adult children and her three grandchildren who do not live with her.

Shortly after her furlough last spring from her job as a senior support specialist for Cincinnati Public Schools, Turner received a $100 gift card through a partnership of United Way of Greater Cincinnati, its affiliated agencies, and Hamilton County Job & Family Services. Her family used the card to buy a variety of necessities, including hand sanitizer, toiletries, food and over-the-counter pharmacy items.

“The assistance we received put a light in all the darkness,” Turner says.

As the pandemic continues to take a toll on families, United Way remains a beacon of hope, committed to providing support and services to the most vulnerable members of our community
