CINCINNATI — Five local businesses are being recognized and celebrated for their outstanding commitment to voluntarism during a year when it was most needed.

EY, Michelman, U.S. Bank, Ingage Partners and Graydon law firm received 2020 Corporate Heroes awards from United Way of Greater Cincinnati for embracing volunteer engagement and providing opportunities for team members to get involved in their community. Employees at the companies volunteered for more hours per capita than others their size in United Way’s annual Corporate Heroes competition.

“Volunteering is integral to United Way’s mission; volunteers create tangible change when they lend their time and talent to support United Way, our partners and other community organizations,” said Moira Weir, president and CEO of United Way. “This was an incredibly difficult year on everyone, but these companies and their employees stayed focused on helping our community. When companies and volunteers unite, we change lives.”

“This honor lands squarely on the shoulders of our associates,” said Steve Shifman, Michelman’s President and CEO, and UWGC’s current Board Chair. “I am grateful for and proud of our associates who safely donated thousands of volunteer hours this year, during a pandemic, to various deserving organizations throughout the region. As a values-driven company, their efforts truly exemplify our company’s core value of giving.”

This is the sixth year United Way recognized Corporate Heroes for their volunteer engagement. EY won the competition in all six years of its existence.

“Here at EY, our purpose is building a better working world, and the volunteering work we do with UWGC and partner agencies gives our people many opportunities to do just that,” said Jeremy Vaughan, Office Managing Partner. “We are honored to receive the award once again.”

The other four winning companies also participated in past years. Graydon won the heroes competition for its size three straight years, while Ingage Partners won two straight years. (Size categories: 750 or more employees; 250 to 749 employees; 100 to 249 employees; 10 to 99 employees.)

"We are so honored to be recognized by United Way as a Corporate Hero; it's a humbling acknowledgement that our mission to use business as a force for good is impacting our community," said Elena Terán, Director of Purpose, Ingage Partners.

“U.S. Bank is dedicated to powering the potential of our customers and our communities,” said Mike Prescott, Regional Group President and Cincinnati Market President for U.S. Bank. “We are honored to receive this Corporate Hero recognition from the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, which is doing so much to help our community during these challenging times.”

Companies sign up for the competition and then track employee volunteer time. Points are earned per each hour volunteered:

  • Five points for each hour volunteered with United Way
  • Two points for each hour volunteered with a United Way agency partner
  • One point for each non-United Way affiliated volunteer hour

Volunteer projects can be customized to match employee interests with the need in the Greater Cincinnati community. Volunteer projects can even be brought onsite. This year, virtual volunteer opportunities were created. If you and your company are interested, more information is available at www.uwgc.org/corporateheroes or by contacting Taleen Cassidy at 513-762-7186 or at Volunteer@uwgc.org. Volunteer opportunities also are available at CincyHelps.org.

“We are fortunate to live in a very giving community,” Weir said. “That was never more apparent than in 2020. These companies helped show United is truly the way to help our neighbors. Thank you for stepping up.”

Corporate Heroes is a program that allows companies to rally their employees to volunteer and tabulates their hours spent. The companies that have the highest numbers of hours are the winners.
