Moira's Message: Black History Month - Fighting for Those Who Will Write the Next Chapters

Read about our commitment to equality today and tomorrow.

 Dear United Way friends,

As we kick off a month celebrating Black Americans who helped shape our nation’s history, I once again feel compelled to discuss why United Way of Greater Cincinnati’s fight for equity is so important.

We want every person in every community to have equitable access to a quality education, financial stability and services that lead to good physical and mental health.

Where there is equity, there is the opportunity to develop the next generation of Black scientists, doctors, teachers, authors, painters, musicians, inventors, politicians and other luminaries who change our world. The next chapter of American history.

We are more intentional than ever about including all people, ensuring all voices are at the table. Our Black Empowerment Works program – designed to address the systemic trend of underinvestment in Black-led ideas and entrepreneurial efforts – is one example. You’ll see thestart of an editorial series on some of those entrepreneurs and their success in today’s newsletter. Look for follow-ups in coming weeks and months.

When we give every person in every community the opportunity to thrive, we give Greater Cincinnati the opportunity to thrive. We give America the opportunity to thrive.

As we celebrate those who brought us here, let’s continue to work for those who will take us further, such as our nation’s youngest National Poet, Amanda Gorman. Check out the poem she wrote on behalf of United Way.

Sincerely,
Moira Weir
President/CEO
