United, We Can
Building a strong community where all people can thrive depends on your generous support.
Moira's Message: Advocating for the People We ServeAdvocating for our organization and our work is important and it is part of what makes United Way different.
Dear United Way friends,
Give. Advocate. Volunteer. These are the three ways we encourage people to get involved with United Way of Greater Cincinnati.
“Advocate” sometimes gets short shrift. More than 60,000 give regularly to United Way. Thousands volunteer each year, directly supporting a United Way effort or one of our partners.
But advocating for our organization and our work is important, too. In fact, part of our work IS advocating. That is what makes United Way different.
Let’s say someone is facing eviction. It is important to help that person find a stable housing situation today. But United Way goes beyond that, trying to ensure a system of support so that person doesn’t face eviction ever again.
We advocate for public policies at the federal, state and local level to develop efficient service delivery systems throughout our region. We want positive, systemic change for those we serve. Yes, we can help them through crisis, but we want to create systems of support so they avoid future crises.
Through advocacy, we can achieve more than any one of us can achieve alone.
That’s where you come in. Advocating for us and our work – that’s important. Advocating for the people we serve – even more important.
In addition to encouraging your family and friends to support United Way and its impact in our community, you could join us in our regular advocacy efforts. Drop an email to a local government leader. Call a state or federal politician. Retweet our tweets. Share our Facebook posts.
You’ll see us highlight issues that are important to us through emails or social media or even mainstream media coverage. Join us in our efforts. Right now, rebuilding our child care system is very important for the people we serve. Join us Monday, April 12, 11 to 11:45 a.m. at a virtual meeting with members of the Southwest Ohio legislative delegation to discuss the importance of investing in infants, children and their families in the Ohio budget. Housing stability is another important topic on our advocacy agenda.
And never forget – every positive word you say about United Way and the work it does has the opportunity to rally someone else to the cause.
Advocate. It’s important.
