My name is Roddell McCullough, and my BOLD story began in 2013. I had expressed an interest in doing more to support a non-profit organization to my manager.  At that time I was the Director of Operations for First Financial Bank. Shortly thereafter, I was approached by our CEO to participate in the Spring BOLD class through United Way of Greater Cincinnati.  I completed my application, and was fortunate to be selected.

I did not know exactly what to expect because I had no prior nonprofit board experience. I found the class to be a tremendous opportunity to equip me for taking the leap into nonprofit board participation. The information and tools  provided via the class -- speakers, mock board meeting, and interaction with nonprofit executive directors at the agency fair -- was all tremendously valuable in setting expectations.

During the class, I indicated my desired area of focus in BoardBank, United Way’s tool to match people like me to local nonprofit boards. My top organization that I expressed interest in was with the YMCA due to my desire to positively impact children. I think it was “divine intervention”, but little did I know that the head of Human Resources and the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati Association Board Chair were former colleagues of mine from my time at Fidelity Investments. They saw my BoardBank request, and I received an immediate response for a meeting.

Soon after, I met with a regional president, and then the Executive Director of Powell Crosley YMCA for a potential branch board position. None of them knew that this was the same YMCA location that all three of my children had grown up in taking swim lessons, playing basketball and soccer, and spending time in the childcare facility. When offered, I immediately accepted the position.

Fast forward, and my BOLD experience has impacted my career and life. I have gone on to become the Board Chair of Powell Crosley YMCA, and now a member of the Greater Cincinnati Association Board, and active on several committees. I have also gone on to represent First Financial Bank on nonprofit boards that the bank provides support to. Because of my passion for nonprofit board participation, I was approached by our CEO and Chief Banking Officer to take a new role as the Director of Community Development for First Financial Bank.  For anyone looking for a life-changing experience, consider applying for a future BOLD session, and begin writing your BOLD Story.
