Meet The Volunteers Behind United Way's Free Tax Services

Tax Season is upon us! This statement makes some people very excited, and others very nervous. Luckily for our region, United Way of Greater Cincinnati has a service that can help BOTH demographics. Did you know that we offer free (yes – FREE!) in-person tax prep services to people in our area whose household income is approximately $54,000 or less? Our free tax prep is easy, safe and secure. And it can save you $250 in tax prep fees while making sure you get all the credits and refunds you deserve.

More than 30 volunteers staff sites sponsored by United Way and partner agencies at locations throughout our region. Some sites are by appointment, others offer walk-in service. For those looking for an online alternative, you may also qualify for our free online service in partnership with H+R Block: myfreetaxes.com

We recently sat down with two tax volunteers to hear why they choose to donate their time and resources to help our community as trained, certified tax preparers. Keith Gehring is a return volunteer and Wendy Kimmel is in her inaugural year, and will even serve as Site Coordinator in her Middletown community.

Kimmel speaks about the financial constraints that exist for many families. “If they had to pay a tax bill, it would be a choice of paying a tax bill, or buying groceries to feed their children that week,” Kimmel said.
