United Way Day of Action to Promote Reading and Kindergarten Readiness

For kids, summertime signifies no school and unlimited time to play and have fun with friends. While the time is a welcome break, it’s also important kids return to school in the fall ready to learn. How do you prevent kids from going down the “summer slide”? Put the June 18 United Way Day of Action on your family's summer to-do list!

Each June, communities around the world come together to harness the volunteer spirit during the United Way Day of Action. It's an opportunity to LIVE UNITED and take collective action to address challenges facing individuals and families in those communities. In Greater Cincinnati, 2016 events are focused on engaging parents, caregivers and kids in building reading skills and preparing for kindergarten.

“Summer learning opportunities are critical in preventing learning loss and are especially important for low-income students who lack access to enrichment programs once the school doors close for summer,” said Amber Brown, senior education manager, United Way of Greater Cincinnati.” Ensuring that all children and youth have the opportunity to learn in the summer is a critical strategy to closing the achievement gap in our community.”

United Way will host two Day of Action events on Saturday, June 18—Wild About Reading! at the Cincinnati Zoo and the Kindergarten-Readiness Fun Fair at UC East in Batavia.
