Families and individuals who earned $53,000 or less in 2014 can take advantage of free in-person tax preparation services through Make Work Pay at locations across the Tristate region. In addition to free state and federal tax preparation and online filing, filers will receive help determining eligibility for and claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
United Way is committed to improving financial stability for individuals and families throughout our region. Part of this includes helping hardworking people obtain free tax preparation and filing services as well as qualifying for EITC and other credits. Last year, almost $21 million in tax refunds were returned to local families, thanks to EITC and free tax preparation services provided by United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), AARP, and the Ohio Benefit Bank.
Another option this tax season for filers with internet access and an income of $60,000 or less is to take advantage of free online filing at myfreetaxes.com.
More than half of individuals and families in the U.S. are eligible for one of these two services. Unfortunately, many families are unaware of their options and could pay, on average, more than $200 to file their federal and state tax returns.
