OverviewUnited Way of Greater Cincinnati’s Tocqueville Society is recognized nationally for its excellence. It is the fastest growing segment of the annual campaign, with close to 700 members contributing $10,000 or more. Members contributed a total of $10.9 million in 2008.
The Alexis de Tocqueville Society, now known as the Tocqueville Society, was created by United Way of America in 1972. The unique society recognizes people who have rendered outstanding voluntary service in the communities and contribute annual gifts of $10,000 and above.
The name was chosen because of the 19th century French diplomat Alexis de Tocqueville's admiration for the spirit of voluntary association and voluntary effort for the common good, a spirit he had observed in America and about which he wrote enthusiastically. This special society is designed to deepen the understanding, commitment and support of individuals to United Way of Greater Cincinnati and to recognize the deep commitment to service.
