Dr. O'dell Owens Speaks at WINGs Spring Luncheon

DSC00264_resized.JPGOn May 13, 40 WINGs members came together for networking, sharing and learning at the WINGs Spring Luncheon held at the Taft Museum of Art. Dr. O'dell Owens, Hamilton County Coroner, was the featured guest speaker and delivered a powerful presentation on "Advancing Early Childhood Development Through Advocacy." Using his platform at the Coroner's office, Dr. Owens is able to reach the disadvantaged youth of Cincinnati by "speaking for the dead, but educating the living."

Chabot_Office_pic_resized.JPGTwelve WINGs members traveled to Washington, D.C. in February to participate in Capitol Hill Day with United Way of America and over 120 other women from across the country. The group advocated to seven senators and representatives from Kentucky and Ohio in support of United Way 211 (the universal number to call to get help for non-emergency issues and give help through volunteering). WINGs members Cheryl Rose (Fifth Third Bank) and Vicki Rogers (U.S. Bank) spoke of their advocacy experience in Washington and why they decided to get involved. The chance to speak to lawmakers was a great opportunity although the chance to meet and get to know other women was also a reason to participate. The group went to Washington as 12 women interested in making a difference. They returned 12 friends that felt empowered and enriched by the experience.

Get Involved! Join WINGs for United Way's National Day of Action! Saturday, June 21 from 1 - 4 p.m.

Devou_Park.jpgThe United Way of Greater Cincinnati's Day of Action on June 21, 2008 is a call to action for people to give, advocate and volunteer to promote the education of children under six. The Day of Action will advance the common good by providing a fun, celebratory kick-off for the early childhood education initiative. Families will be introduced to Born Learning Trails and their use by community residents. Attendees will learn about the impact United Way has on individual lives and our community.

Born Learning Trail
The Born Learning Trail is a ten-station trail with activities that teach children under age six new skills and helps strengthen the parent-child bond. It is a permanent installation along a trail in a park or community center.

All Born Learning Trails will be constructed by volunteers and installed by park staff prior to June 21. Born Learning is a campaign to educate parents and caregivers to turn everyday moments into fun learning experiences (more info at www.bornlearning.org). The Day of Action will be the 'unveiling' of the trails and each community's commitment to early childhood initiatives. Volunteers and UWGC staff will help with the festivities and family activities.

How to volunteer
WINGs members and their families will have multiple opportunities to help including distributing snacks, staffing activity stations and helping plant flowers. If you would like to volunteer, contact Rachel Fausz at 513-762-7194or email wings@uwgc.org.

WINGs Impact Team to Host 4C Training Workshops

As the designated child care resource and referral agency for this region, 4C, a United Way agency partner,is the hub of information on early care and education programs and the largest provider of training and technical assistance for early childhood care-givers and teachers. The WINGs Impact Team is providing members an opportunity to train & share expertise with the care-givers and 4C staff in such areas as time management, coaching and supervision.

To begin this partnership, WINGs members will work with 4C to identify areas in which we can help their staff gain advanced training (using knowledge and expertise from corporate trainings in which WINGs members have participated). Initially, we will provide two trainings for the staff at 4C this fall. Watch for an opportunity to share your knowledge with those that work with child care workers throughout region.

Over time, our plan is to offer our skills and expertise to agencies that need assistance on a specific project. We will team 3-6 WINGs members together to work directly with an agency. Could you help with a marketing plan or branding effort? Or do you have knowledge of finance and budgeting that you could share with an agency? Maybe you could assist an agency with updating their personnel policies. If you have expertise in one of these areas or any of those listed below and are interested in sharing your knowledge, contact Rachel Fausz at 513-762-7194 or email wings@uwgc.org.
